On October 17, 2019, amendments to Federal Law as of May 31, 2002 N 62-ФЗ “On Citizenship of Russia”, providing for the right of a citizen of Russia to file a notice of termination of foreign citizenship or the right to permanent residence in another country, will come into force.
The changes are provided for by the Federal Law as of 18.07.2019 N 188-ФЗ and are introduced in Article 6 “Dual Citizenship” of the Federal Law “On Citizenship of Russia”.
The specified notification shall be submitted by a citizen of Russia to the territorial authority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the place of residence of a citizen in Russia. A copy of the document on the termination of the foreign citizenship or the right to permanent residence in a foreign state, as well as a copy of the passport of a citizen of Russia or another document proving the identity of a citizen in the territory of Russia, is attached to the notification.
These changes are aimed at filling the legal gap: a citizen of the Russian Federation who had previously notified that he had foreign citizenship or the right to reside in another state had no opportunity to notify of withdrawal of foreign citizenship or loss of permanent residence status in another state.
