Earlier, Federal Law No. 370-FZ of September 24, 2022 "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Russia" gave the right to obtain Russian citizenship to foreign citizens who entered into a contract to serve in the Russian Armed Forces, other troops or military formations for a period of at least one year. We wrote about this federal law earlier in our news.
A similar provision is contained in the new law "On Citizenship of Russia", which will come into force on October 26, 2023.
According to the explanatory note to the draft law, the current legislation does not provide for a simplified acquisition of Russian citizenship by foreign citizens who have taken part in the defense of Donbass since 2014, being part of the armed formations of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.
The new draft law proposes to grant such a right to foreign citizens who took part in hostilities as part of the Armed Forces of the Donetsk People's Republic, the People's Militia of the Luhansk People's Republic, military formations and bodies of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic starting from May 11, 2014.
Consideration of the draft law in the first reading is scheduled for September 2023. We will monitor the progress of the draft law and inform you of any significant developments and changes.
