From the next day, that is, from November 23, 2024, persons who did not undergo the oath-taking procedure will be considered not to have acquired Russian citizenship, and decisions to accept them into Russian citizenship will be invalid.
We remind you that on 26.10.2023, a new law on Russian citizenship came into force (more details in our news), replacing the previously valid law on citizenship effective since 2002. In accordance with this law, a number of norms and provisions concerning Russian citizenship are determined by decrees of the President of Russia.
One of such decrees was the Decree of the President of Russia dated November 22, 2023 No. 889 "Issues of Russian citizenship", clause 3 of which established a deadline for taking the oath by citizens who acquired Russian citizenship, namely one year from the date of publication of this decree.
This requirement does not apply to those who acquired Russian citizenship before the introduction of the obligation to take the Oath of a citizen of Russia (September 1, 2017), or were exempt from taking it on the date of admission to Russian citizenship.
