Since 12 May, the US Embassy in Moscow has reduced the number of consular services offered to include only emergency services for US citizens and a limited number of immigration visas for expired and life-threatening cases, according to the embassy's website.
The reduction in services is due to the fact that on 23 April the Russian government announced its intention to ban US missions in Russia from employing foreign nationals in any capacity. Therefore, non-immigrant visas for non-diplomatic travel will be discontinued.
«Embassy Moscow will not offer routine notarial services, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, or renewal passport services for the foreseeable future,» the embassy reports.
US citizens who are living in Russia and need a new US passport to legally stay in the country, as well as those who need a US passport urgently in a life or death emergency (booking travel with an expired US passport does not qualify), should send a letter to info@confidencegroup.ru and the embassy will try to accommodate your request.
In addition, the embassy strongly urges US citizens who are in Russia with an expired visa to leave the country by 15 June 2021.
