The Thai government has decided to tighten visa policies for foreign tourists. Fr om 15 September 2026, the maximum visa-free stay in the Kingdom of Thailand will be 30 days, down fr om the previous 60 days. The relevant decree, signed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, has been published in the Royal Gazette and will take effect 15 days later, starting from 15 September 2026.
The new rules repeal the 2024 regulation that temporarily extended the visa-free period to 60 days. The length of stay reverts to the standard 30 days that were in effect before 2024. Despite the reduction in the basic period, tourists can still extend their stay by an additional 30 days through the Thai Immigration Bureau upon payment of a fee of 1,900 baht (about 5,000 rubles).
Additional restrictions and goals of the changes
In addition to shortening the stay period, authorities are introducing a lim it on entry via land border checkpoints – no more than twice a year. This restriction does not apply to arrivals by air.
Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the measures are aimed at combating illegal activities and abuse of tourist status. This refers to the practice of "visa runs" and "border runs" – short trips to neighbouring countries (Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia) to renew the stay period – as well as cases of illegal employment of foreigners.
Impact on tourist flow
The Russian Union of Tourism Industry (RUTI) stressed that the changes will not significantly affect the main tourist flow, as most Russian tourists visit Thailand for less than 30 days. However, the restrictions will affect "winterers" and freelancers who use the visa-free regime for long-term stays.
According to Thai authorities, a record 1.9 million Russians visited Thailand in 2025, making Russia the fourth largest tourist market for the kingdom.
