On February 16, 2023, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia Kolokoltsev decided to dismiss Igor Dudnik, Deputy Head of the Migration Department of the Moscow Interior Ministry. According to media reports, the immediate reason for his dismissal was the refusal to grant temporary asylum in Russia to a Russian-speaking writer, a citizen of Latvia, Sergey Vasiliev, who was denied political asylum in Russia and threatened to be forcibly expelled from the country. Sergei Vasiliev faces a prison term in Finland and Latvia for providing humanitarian assistance to the residents of Donbass.On the same day, the head of the Department for Refugees, Temporary Asylum and Internally Displaced Persons, Tatyana Dmitrieva, was also dismissed. The reason is the same - "a formal approach to citizens' complaints."
According to the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Irina Volk, “the audit showed that the statement of Sergei Vasilyev was considered superficially by authorized officials, without taking into account all the circumstances, including the presence of a threat to his life and health in the territory of the state of permanent residence. As a result, an unreasonable decision was made to refuse to grant Sergey Vasiliev temporary asylum.”
According to her, at present, the decision to refuse to grant Vasiliev temporary asylum has been annulled as illegal, and soon his issue will be resolved positively.
